Testing of disposable devices

The disposable medical device industry (such as syringes, catheters, blood bags and infusion sets) is characterized by high production volumes and extremely stringent regulatory requirements. To ensure patient safety and product reliability, it is essential to implement rigorous quality control plans, from qualification of incoming materials to validation of the finished component.
Single-use device testing allows verification of geometric conformity, tightness of assemblies, and resistance to actual clinical use conditions, providing objective data both during research and development and for statistical process monitoring (SPC) on production batches.

Testing and validation of single-use devices with TEC Eurolab

For the world of disposable devices, thanks to its instrumentation, TEC Eurolab performs different types of dimensional and statistical process control (SPC), functional and environmental validation tests, as well as bonding and weld validation and reverse engineering.

Materials characterization

  • Testing of polymers and composites to verify the chemical-physical and thermal properties of the plastic materials used (e.g., PVC, polyurethane, polycarbonates), ascertaining their suitability and stability for biomedical use
  • Analyses on targeted metals to check needles, cannulas, and small metal parts for proper alloy composition, evaluate microstructural properties, and prevent defects or corrosive phenomena.
  • Analyses on adhesives and sealants critical for chemical and mechanical validation of bonding and welding between components of different natures (e.g., pipe-connector joints), in order to ensure airtightness and avoid detachment under pressure.

Mechanical Validation and Simulation of Operating Conditions

Environmental tests to simulate transport and storage conditions (e.g., accelerated aging) by exposure to thermal cycling in climatic chambers, combined with leak tests or verification of device activation parameters.

Fatigue testing: application of repeated load or pressure cycles to simulate mechanical wear and tear over time, testing the flexibility, tightness and structural strength of valves, diaphragms and deformable components.

Dimensional checks

Dimensional inspections for verification of design dimensions, first article inspection (FAI) and reverse engineering, ensuring perfect mating compatibility and stability of the molding process
