Welding certification

Welding certification is the official attestation that guarantees quality, safety and compliance in all welding-related activities. The attestation not only concerns the individual operator who obtains the welding certificate, but also the organization. In fact, it is possible to certify both the welding processes according to European standards such as the ISO 15614 series, ISO 15613 or according to the American ASME IX code, AWS, and the quality management system in welding, according to ISO 3834.

Certified welding ensures that the work is done in line with international standards, reducing risks and increasing the reliability of the final product.
Welding certification can therefore be applied to three different areas:

  • welder’s license (single operator)
  • welding processes
  • welding quality management system(3834)

What certification are you looking for?

Welding certificate for the process

Welding process certification certifies that a company can manage its welding activities in line with international standards. Standards such as the ISO 15614 series and ISO 15613 define requirements to qualify not the individual operator but the process adopted, while the American ASME IX, AWS codes define requirements for both welding processes and patents, ensuring uniformity and reliability of results. For companies operating in regulated industries-such as metal structures, carpentry and plant engineering-a certified welding is an essential requirement to ensure quality, safety and compliance.

Welding certificate related to personnel

The best-known form of certification is definitely the welder’s license, a certificate that certifies the individual operator’s competence in performing welds in accordance with relevant standards. The normative references for welder’s licenses are found in the ISO 9606 series (manual welder’s license), ISO 14732 (automatic welder’s license) and the American ASME IX and AWS codes. Unlike certifications involving company processes or systems, this qualification is strictly personal and does not involve the organization as a whole. It is therefore a guarantee of the welder’s technical skill, which is essential for those who work in contexts where joint quality is a must.

Welding certificate related to the quality system

In addition to qualification of welders and processes, there is a certification that covers the company’s entire quality system. This level of attestation ensures that the organization has a structured approach to ensuring weld quality, including operators, processes and overall management methods. It is a broader and more comprehensive form of certification designed for companies wishing to demonstrate their system’s compliance with recognized international standards (ISO 3834), thus offering additional assurance of reliability to the market.

What certification are you looking for?

Welding certification: what do you need?

Valor, Sideius Certification Body, in collaboration with TEC Eurolab Laboratories, can support companies and professionals in obtaining Certifications in the field of welding for personnel, process and system.

Certified welding: Why certifying welders and processes pays off for companies

Certifying welding means ensuring quality, safety and competitiveness. Certification of welders ensures that every joint is made by qualified personnel, reducing the risk of defects and rework. At the same time, certifying processes and management systems enables the company to demonstrate compliance with international standards, a requirement that is increasingly in demand in regulated industries.
In addition to meeting regulatory and contractual obligations, certification is a competitive advantage: it improves the perceived reliability of customers, facilitates access to new markets, and helps to consolidate the company’s reputation over the long term.

When is welding certification mandatory

Whether welding certification is mandatory depends on the context in which the company operates and the type of activities performed. In some cases, the qualification of welders or processes is a contractual requirement demanded by principals, while in other regulated sectors it becomes a real obligation stipulated by technical regulations. Metal structures, carpentry and plants are examples of areas where certified personnel and processes cannot be ignored. For companies, having the appropriate certifications means not only complying with the law, but also ensuring safety, quality and internationally recognized compliance.

Rely on the professionalism of Valor

Choosing Valor for welding certification means relying on a qualified and competent partner who can accompany companies and individual welders all the way, from training courses, if necessary, to the management of exams to obtain certification. TEC Eurolab can support welders who want to obtain a welding license, as well as follow companies that want to qualify their welding process or their quality management system. Thanks to a team of qualified inspectors, we can offer widespread support throughout Italy and guarantee speed and efficiency in handling certification requests. Our experience has allowed us to collaborate with companies operating in highly regulated sectors, such as aerospace (according to the AWS code), nuclear, food contact and automotive, supporting them in obtaining the qualifications essential to access new orders and markets.

FAQ - Welding Certification

What is welding certification?
Welding certification is an official attestation that demonstrates the competence of the welder, the conformity of welding processes or the soundness of the quality management system in welding, according to international standards.
The welder’s license is about the individual operator, not about the organization as a whole but certifies the practical skills and technical abilities of the employee, while process certification qualifies the welding methods used by the company.
The main ones are the ISO 15614 and ISO 15613 series, ASME IX and AWS code for processes and ISO 3834 for quality management systems.
It depends on the industry and the type of work: in areas such as metal structures, carpentry and plant engineering it may be a contractual requirement or a regulatory requirement.
Welding certifications can be issued by Certification Bodies operating according to the relevant standards. TEC Eurolab is an accredited Certification Body that issues accredited welding certifications (by ACCREDIA – Ente Italiano di Certificazione), which enjoy a higher level of recognition and reliability by the market and supply chain.
A welder’s license can last from 2 to 6 years depending on the reference standard. The most common licenses are generally valid for 3 years, with the possibility of renewal upon verification of operational continuity and competence. For example, an ISO 9606-1 steel welder’s license can be valid for 1 to 3 years, ISO 14732 automatic licenses are valid for 6 years, and the ISO 9606-2 aluminum license is valid for 2 years.
Welding certification improves product quality and safety, reduces the risk of nonconformity, strengthens customer confidence, and can be a competitive advantage in the market.
