Testing of medical surgical devices

Surgical instrumentation operates under critical conditions and must ensure unaltered mechanical and safety performance over time. Validation plans for medical-surgical devices (irons, blades, drills, forceps) focus on material durability, geometric accuracy, and resistance to repeated thermal and chemical stresses, such as operating room use cycles and autoclave sterilization.
Performing targeted tests allows us to qualify incoming materials, verify the effectiveness of surface treatments, and ensure that production batches conform to the rigorous standards of the biomedical industry.

Testing and validation of medical surgical devices with TEC Eurolab

For the world of medical surgical devices, TEC Eurolab performs different types of functional and environmental tests. We support companies with dimensional checks, analysis to determine the chemical and physical characterization of plastic and metallic materials as well as corrosion tests.

Materials characterization and corrosion resistance

Analyses on metals to verify the chemical composition of the alloy, microstructural analysis, and search for inclusions or defects that could trigger fractures, cracks, or premature wear during the use of surgical iron.

Analysis of polymers and composites to study the thermomechanical and chemical-physical properties of plastics used in accessory or disposable components, evaluating their structural stability following sterilization or fluid contact.

Corrosion and environmental conditioning: exposure to salt spray and specific tests to measure the effectiveness of passivation treatments and the resistance of metals to critical degradative phenomena, such as pitting or crevice corrosion, triggered by biological fluids or disinfectant agents.

Functional Validation

Functional environmental tests to simulate the actual storage and aging conditions of the device. Functional tests and climate chamber cycling allow evaluation of the retention of mechanical properties (e.g., stiffness, flexural strength) and the tightness of any assemblies after prolonged exposure to thermal stress.

Dimensional control

Dimensional checks, high-precision metrological inspections, and reverse engineering to verify strict adherence to design tolerances on blades, clutches, and articulated joints, ensuring perfect interchangeability and smooth motion of mechanical parts
