Static tests
The objective of static testing of materials is to characterize their mechanical behavior, providing crucial data for structural design and validation. The results obtained from these analyses are the basis for engineering decisions in product development, quality control and certification.
Among the main types of static tests:
- Tensile testing
- Compression testing
- Bending tests
- Shear tests
- Resilience Tests
The static tests carried out in TEC Eurolab
In TEC Eurolab’s laboratory, static tests are performed according to rigorous protocols to ensure maximum accuracy and reliability of results. These analyses make it possible to evaluate the mechanical behavior of materials and components subjected to slow and constant stresses, simulating real operating conditions.
During static testing of materials, a number of key variables are taken into account: the type of stress applied, strain rate, test temperature, specimen geometry and method of attachment. All these factors influence the mechanical performance of the material and are carefully monitored and recorded. After specimen preparation within our Mechanical Processing Department, the specimen or specimens (depending on the number of specimens to be tested) are placed inside the machine configured according to the settings of the test to be performed. During the test, all the above variables are measured, and at the end of the test, a detailed report is prepared with all the results of the test. In this way the customer can receive a complete document and the technical support needed to make informed decisions.
Static material tests can be conducted under different environmental conditions, denoted by the acronyms:
- RT (Room Temperature) – tests performed at room temperature. At this temperature TEC Eurolab can perform:
- Tensile tests using ISO 6892-1 and ASTM E8 methods.
- Poisson modulus tensile tests – ASTM Method E8/E8M, ISO 6892-1
- Resilience testing using ISO 148-1, ASTM E23 methods.
- Compression testing using ISO 604 AND ASTM D695 methods.
- Squeeze test – Method EN 10164
- Flattening/bending test – Method ISO 7438, ASTM E290
- Hydrogen embrittlement – ASTM Method F519
- HT (High Temperature) – tests carried out at high temperature that include:
- Hot Tensile (up to 1000°C) – ASTM Method E21, ISO 6892-2
- Stress rupture test up to 1000°C- ASTM Method E139, ASTM E292
- LT ( Low Temperature) – tests carried out at low temperature:
- Cold traction (down to -40°C)
The materials tested in the static tests
Static tests are applied to different types of materials, with the aim of verifying their mechanical properties under controlled stress conditions. Among the materials most frequently subjected to static materials testing are metals and alloys (such as carbon steels, stainless steels, aluminum alloys, titanium, copper and nickel), but also polymers, composite materials, elastomers and bonding systems.
These static materials tests provide fundamental information for the safe use of materials in industry and are part of the most common mechanical tests, which are indispensable in the qualification and quality control phase.
