Summary

Flammability testing services for the manufacturing industry

The flammability test, or flammability test, is a laboratory test used to assess how easily a material catches fire, its mode of combustion and the rate of flame spread. This analysis is used to determine a product’s level of fire risk while verifying compliance with current safety regulations.

Fields of application of the analysis

Areas of use for this type of test include:

  • certify building materials
  • test electrical and electronic components
  • evaluate fabrics and clothing
approve vehicle interiors for cars, planes, and trains
  • check toys and consumer products

Conduct of the test and evaluation parameters

During the execution of the test, performed at TEC Eurolab’s Test Engineering laboratories, the material is exposed to a controlled flame for a specific time interval. Our technicians can perform the tests by placing the specimen in horizontal, vertical, 45-degree configuration or in custom positions, including specific variations for electrical cables.

Instrumental observation of the test allows critical parameters to be checked, namely:

  • The possible ignition of the flame and the relative persistence time of combustion
  • The presence of dripping molten material
  • The speed with which the flame spreads over the surface

The results obtained allow the examined material to be classified according to the strict technical reference standards.

Regulatory standards for the automotive and aerospace sectors

Our testing meets a wide range of standards specific to the automotive and aerospace industries. Common standards we cover in our testing plans include UL94, 7G-2000, LP.7M079, DIN 75200, VW TL 1010 and SAE S8043C.

TEC Eurolab’s Test Engineering laboratory offers the opportunity to perform tests directly on the finished component, expanding the options for technical investigation beyond the usual standardized specimen.

The value of prevention and compliance

Performing the flammability test turns out to be a key step for any manufacturing company, as it reduces the risk of fire by actively protecting the safety of people and environments. This technical verification is a mandatory requirement for the marketing of many industrial products and is essential throughout the design phase of fire retardant materials.
