TEC Eurolab supports clients in the process of testing, training and certification in line with the European FCM (materials and objects in contact with food) regulation.
On September 3, 2020, EU Regulation 2020/1245 was published in the European Official Journal, which introduces substantive amendments to EU Regulation 10/2011 concerning specific rules regarding plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food (FCM ).
The changes are numerous, and the important changes are found in food contact materials testing.
Specifically, the new Regulation (EU) 2020/1245 amends Annexes I, II, IV and V of the previous 2011 regulation.
Summary Amendments to FCM Regulation 2020/1245
- Annex I: new authorized substances added to the positive list and new migration limits established for some substances
- Annex II: Substantially modified the restrictions applicable to plastic materials and articles relating to metals and primary aromatic amines.
- Annex IV: inserted some new aspects to be introduced in the “Declaration of Conformity”;
- Annex V: The new features concern some changes on the conduct of migration testing from plastic materials and objects in contact with foodstuffs. Specifications have been introduced for tests on materials or objects that in final application become part of a food processing equipment or machinery, or a part thereof; modified testing requirements for repeated-use materials and objects on the specific migration front; decided changes on compliance verification and introduced a new contact condition.
The Regulation is effective from 09/23/2020, but the measure specifies that plastic FCM complying with Regulation (EU) No.10/2011 that were first placed on the market before 03/23/2021 may continue to be placed on the market until 09/23/2022 and remain there until stocks are exhausted.
