La mia bussola. takes its cue from the story of two young talents, Paolo Moscatti and Alberto Montagnani, with a lot of ambition but very little money in the bank, who in 1990 opened a small materials analysis laboratory in an apartment near the historic center of Modena. By what means and with what tools did that laboratory become TEC Eurolab, a reference for the automotive, aeronautics, mechanical and biomedical industries?
In this book, Paolo Moscatti recounts, with irony and humor, anecdotes that draw a portrait of the Modenese and, in some ways, Italian industry of the last sixty years; he recounts the adventures in which he has been involved, always following his compass, just like a captain who, before embarking, must set a course and make assumptions about direction, preparing to face the pitfalls of navigation on the open sea.
But what is the compass? The compass is the device of the journey, the brain, that which cannot, in any way, get lost or misplaced, nor can it be delegated in toto to managers or consultants, however trained and reliable.
La mia bussola is a book that invites one to listen to what one hears between the lines, beyond the problems that the entrepreneur encounters (not least, that of the so-called “generational handover”) and the battles of civilization that he or she wages every day for the freedom of his or her business. Everyone can find in this book inspiration and elements for starting a business or running an existing one with a new approach, marked by humanitas, instead of the mythology of efficiencyism, which makes the environment arid and deprives employees of the art and invention necessary for their own satisfaction and success and that of the business itself. The portrait that emerges from this book is that of the enterprise of the future, already in place in TEC Eurolab.
Paolo Moscatti was born in Modena in 1956, and is president of TEC Eurolab and currently president of ALPI (Association of Laboratories and Certification and Inspection Bodies) and past president of EUROLAB (European Federation of Associations of Measurement, Testing and Analysis Laboratories), as well as a member of the Board of Directors of Accredia (single accreditation body for Italy). He was one of the founders of the Association for CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) in Modena and ITS-Maker (Higher Institute of Mechanics, Mechatronics, Motor and Packaging). Since 2003, his articles and interviews have been published in the magazine “The City of the Second Renaissance.”
