metal materials tests, mechanical tests on metal materials

Mechanical tests

The purposes of mechanical tests are a lot, such as:
· material classification;
· investigations on the changing of mechanical characteristics due to thermic treatments;
· welding check;
· machinability considerations;
· structure considerations.

These tests are carried out every time the resistance characteristics of the concerned material have to be evaluated.
The equipment used for carrying out such tests are all calibrated by a SIT Centre every year, thus ensuring the certainty of given data.

Tensile test (compression, bending, folding):
These tests are usually carried out on standard test samples (that TEC Eurolab S.r.l. gets from the customers’ samples), but, in some cases, these can be carried out on finished products as well (hooks, chains, bolts, couplings, etc.). TEC Eurolab S.r.l. has several machines for testing materials, capable of applying forces ranging from 50 N (5 kg) to 600,000 N (60 T). This high versatility enables the testing of both thin sheet straps and 25-mm welding butts.

By means of this test, the following can be determined:
. total ultimate tensile strength
. unit ultimate tensile strength
. necking down
. unit yield strength
. elongation
. elastic modulus

Hardness tests
Hardometers of TEC Eurolab S.r.l. measure – with the suitable scales – the hardness with variable applied loads ranging from 1 g to 3000 kg. Tests are carried out for all scales of metallurgic concern.

Impact tests
Carried out by means of a Charpy pendulum with a 30-kg hammer. Temperature range: from room temperature to -196 °C.
