Questions Why does a particular fails? Did it fail due to a fatigue phenomenon? Or due to an overload? Or maybe due to a wrong thermic treatment? Is a corrosion phenomenon involved? We worked on hundreds of cases like this!
The technique This analysis is a particular survey that finds out the causes leading to the failure of the various components by means of several tests and inspections. It is a real research requiring a deep knowledge of the material, a deep experience, a technologically advanced equipment (optical microscope, electron microscope with energy dispersion microsound, etc.) and the availability of as much information as possible about the component behaviour during use.
Thanks to all this, the "failure analyst" is able to understand the problem and to propose possible solutions or suggestions to prevent the conditions triggering the phenomenon from occurring again.
Answers Every investigation ends with the drawing of a detailed report containing the failure description, the identification of the fracture mechanism, the main cause and the factors helping the phenomenon propagation and the possible recommendations to avoid its repeating.
Your contribution We gained a deep experience in this field, but your co-operation is fundamental to the success of the research. The accurate description of the problem and the sample preservation (failure surfaces contain precious information that can partially or totally destroyed due to rubbing and/or oxidation) give an important contribution to the correct understanding of the phenomenon causes. In some cases, it could be advisable that our staff intervenes in situ in order to have an idea of the situation and to make the sampling paying the due attention.
